A Bag Of Songs exclusive early preview today from Adam & Daves Bloodline’s upcoming Boycott Classics album. In The Zoo is a soaring slice of power pop filled with the sound of chiming guitars that urge you to turn it up as soon as it comes on. Last year’s New Age Boredom EP  was among the year’s best releases and based on this one the full length followup is sure to be excellent as well. Boycott Classics is due May 12th, but in the meantime you can catch them live at The North Star in Philadelphia next week. The band is also promising a big CD release party when the date nears so stay tuned.

HOT New Music : The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart

Here at BOS we’ve been big fans of The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart ever since we first heard them back in 2007 when their Cloudberry Records EP for This Love Is Fucking Right was released. Their first couple singles were excellent slabs of noisy melodic pop, and their self titled debut full length on Slumberland Records fully delivers and expands upon the promise they showed. It even garnered them an 8.6 and Best New Music rating from the notoriously finicky Pitchfork. Check out a couple tracks from the new album below and be sure to catch them when their tour heads your way, they’ll be at Philly’s newest musical hotspot tonight, Kung Fu Necktie, with the equally excellent locals Brown Recluse Sings , and NY’s The Depreciation Guild opening. See you there.

Los Campesinos! have taken the frenetic danceable sounds that made Hold On Now, Youngster… one the better records of the year, focused and refined them just a little bit, and the end result is their fine second release of the year, the “mini album” We are Beautiful,We Are Doomed. It’s available digitally today with an extremely limited cd edition to be released next week. I’d advise picking up a copy of this quick they won’t last long.

Here’s some info about the Limted Edition via their website :
– 27th October sees the release of what the majority of you have decided to call our ‘second’ ‘album’. Not that we ever have mind you.
– There will be no singles released from this RECORD.
– This RELEASE is going to be limited. There will be one, worldwide run of CDs, and then it will be out of print. Done with.
-The package comes in a 14cm by 19cm by 2.5cm two-piece card box. That makes it rectangular in shape.
– The CD will be accompanied by a self-made DVD documentary of our weekend at Oya festival and SummerSonic in August of this year.
– It also includes a 30+ page ‘zine, including the record’s lyrics and contributions by artists including Xiu Xiu, Grandaddy, Tender Forever, Menomena, Parenthetical Girls and Paul Heaton, based around the title ‘We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed’.
– Also each box comes with an exclusive poster drawn for us by Jeffrey Brown.

They also put on an extremely fun live show which I was lucky to catch earlier this year. Sadly no upcoming US dates but they’ll be traversing across the UK,Europe and beyond well into December. I Highly recommend checking them out if they’re coming near you.

HOT New Music : Of Montreal – Skeletal Lamping

August 31, 2008 by · 2 Comments

I was never a huge Of Montreal fan, I liked a couple songs here and there, but the new one, Skeletal Lamping has me hooked. It is an amazing blend of 70’s rock, soul and disco and current electronic dance sounds all melded together with an editing style that sounds like a combination of White Album era Beatles and Girl Talk. It’s obvious all those nights of hosting live karaoke shows have seeped into their musical consciousness. Chock full of NSFW lyrics that rival Prince in his lascivious prime, it’s a classic mix of sex and rock and roll which the surreal cover art depicts pretty accurately. Here’s the opening and closing tracks courtesy of Spin & Rolling Stone to give you a small taste, but the best songs lie in between, and I hate to be a tease but unfortunately I need to leave you to your own internet saavy to hear them before the October release date. Some of my favs at the moment are For Our Elegant Caste, the horn infused Eluardian Instance and the smooth soul of Plastis Wafers.

HOT Summer Tour : James Hunter and Chris Isaak

A few weeks ago I caught James Hunter as he tore through an absolutely smoldering set of his horn infused soul music at World Cafe Live in Philadelphia (listen here). With a sound reminiscient of people like Sam Cooke, Ray Charles and Jackie Wilson, his live show is a party not to be missed as James pours 110% into every performance. His latest disc, The Hard Way is easily among the best of 2008 so far. As if that wasn’t good enough, James is teaming up with Chris Isaak, an amazing showman himself, in what is sure to be one of the hottest double bills of the summer. Check it out when it heads your way, and don’t forget to bring your dancing shoes because this one will be impossible to not get up and shake your thing to.

HOT New Music : The Dutchess and The Duke

July 9, 2008 by · Leave a Comment

From the opening guitar strum and, the softly spoken intro “Reservoir Park, 1, 2, 3, 4” to the closing sing along at the end of Armageddon Time, “Now I’ve got you by my side, and I’m feeling alright” The Dutchess And The Duke‘s, debut full length She’s the Dutchess, He’s the Duke careens along in it’s lo-fi immediate glory like a combination of Bob Dylan, The Mamas & The Papas and early Rolling Stones swagger. With the familiar warmth of a lost 60’s classic and the jagged edge of a modern recording, everything old is new again and sounding better than ever. Kimberly Morrison(aka The Dutchess) and Jesse Lortz(aka The Duke) holed up last fall at Magical Basement Studios in West Seattle with Bryan Standridge behind the board of an 8- track and recorded a modern folk classic. It’s chock full of strummy acoustic guitars and percussion with more than enough pure pop melodies and sing along vocal harmonies to have you hooked after just one listen. I’m not the first one to sing their praises and I certainly won’t be the last, jump on the bandwagon now, because this record really is as good as all of the buzz you’ve been hearing about it. One of my personal favorites of the year so far.

5 On A Friday : Oooh that’s hot !

This week for 5 On A Friday, a a taste of what was “hot” this week.
(sorry no direct MP3 links today, all will direct you to another page where you can hear the song)

1:Sure, Amercian Idol wasted a lot of powerful technology to bring you Celene Dion singing with a virtual Elvis, but this was the one AI moment you truly needed to see.

2: Covering LCD Soundsystem‘s song All My Friends was one of the in things to do. Here are versions by by Franz Ferdinand and John Cale.

MP3: Franz Ferdinand – All My Friends (via Kwaya Na Kisser)
MP3: John Cale – All My Friends (via Let’s Sexy Fighting)

3: Icky Thump. For me Jack White’s been long past overkill, but he’s still back with more. Here’s the first single for the new White Stripes disc of the same name.

MP3: The White Stripes – Icky Thump (via Your Head’s Not Right)

4: iTunes UK springs a leak allowing an early return of Bjork from the planet Iceland with more of her trademark soundscaping.

MP3 : Bjork – Earth Intruders (via Who Killed The Mixtape)

5: A baby spoonful of information about the new Spoon disc. The cover art for Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga.
