Some photos from this past Friday night, Leap Day, February 29th with Scary Monster and It’s A King Thing at Tritone In Philadelphia. Going with an orange theme as the what to wear color of the night, Scary Monster started it off with a rocking set of indie pop songs from their upcoming CD. New Jersey’s It’s a King Thing followed with their blend of guitar power pop, sort of sounding like a cross between Weezer and Nada Surf. Brian from It’s A King Thing was getting shocked by the microphone so he ended up covering it with the drummer’s sock right off his foot as you can see in the photos and singing into it the whole night. Made for some entertaining humor from the stage for sure. A great night of music all around.
Tapping the Live Music Archive today for an incendiary performance from pedal steel guitar virtuoso Robert Randolph. Robert is a New Jersey native that began playing the steel guitar in the House of God Church worship services and has since gone on to tour alongside the likes of Eric Clapton, North Mississippi Allstars and others.

Just so no one is left out as I can’t honestly saw I saw too many sub par shows this past year, the list above is all of the bands I’ve seen at the roughly 75 or so shows I’ve seen since January. A couple I didn’t get to see were Arcade Fire and The National, two I would really have liked to.
The Philadelphia music scene is just amazing right now and my favorite venue of the past year hands down goes to Johnny Brendas, where I saw over twenty shows. Rolling Stone magazine named it in their recent Hot issue as Hot Music Club and it is well deserved, it is outstanding on all counts.
The list below represents my standout shows of the year in roughly chrononlogical order.
The Hold Steady @ The Stone Pony and The TLA – The Hold Steady is out playing good old sweat drenched rock and roll, and the communal experience at one of ther shows is amazing. One of the best American bands playing live today.
Snow Patrol @ The Tweeter Center – Snow Patrol’s album was one of my favorites of 2006, this was my second time seeing them and although the first was in a smaller club this one delivered.
The Clientele @ Johnny Brendas [More]- Went to see this on a whim on a Monday night, mostly songs from their excellent new God Save The Clientele cranked up a notch for a live setting.
!!! w/ Holy F*ck @ The TLA – I expected a non stop funk filled dance fest from !!!, but Holy F*ck was one of my great surprises of the year and were as good as or maybe even better than !!!
LCD Soundsystem @ The TLA [More]- a free Myspace sponsored show in a club. They took one of the best albums of the year to an even higher level live.
Ryan Adams @ World Cafe Live Free At Noon – Ryan Adams return to form with a breathtaking all acoustic set.
David Vandervelde w/ Blitzen Trapper @ Johnny Brendas [More]- This was on a Monday night coming after three days in a row at the WXPN music fest having just seen some 25 or so great bands and it still blew my mind.
The Cribs @ Johnny Brendas [More]- Do not miss this band if you have the chance, one of the true “holy shit !” performances I saw this year. A three piece band that comes at you with the in your face live fury of The Ramones.
Illuminea CD release party w/ The Swimmers @ Johnny Brendas [More]- Two of Philadelphia’s finest playing stellar sets on the same night.
The Format @ The Trocadero – The Format have one of the best high energy fun shows going.
Josh Ritter @ World Cafe Free At Noon [More]- Josh Ritter kicks it up a notch with a band for this tour and just absolutely delivetrs apon all counts. Phenomenal. An acoustic cover of Springsteen’s The River was one of the single best performances of any song I witnessed all year by any band.
The A-Sides CD Release Party w/ The Capitol Years,Bitter Bitter Weeks @ Johnny Brendas [More]- Philadlelphia bands sharing a bill know how to bring out the best in each other and this was no exception. Top notch performances by all three of the bands.
Bruce Springsteen @ Wachovia Center (10/6/07) – The second night of two for Bruce in Philadelphia, while the first night was marred by horrible sound and an average performance, this night was classic Springsteen and just tore the roof off.
Black Mountain @ Johnny Brendas [More]- I’ve been waiting nearly two years for Black Mountain to head back out on tour, and this was worth the wait. A rhythmic, psychedelic tour de force. A friend I took with me who had never heard of them walked out saying it was one of the best club shows he’d ever seen.
Jealous Girlfriends @ The Khyber,Tritone & Johnny Brendas [More]- The first time I saw the NYC’s Jealous Girlfriends I was blown away. Every show after that lived up to the high standard set by the first one. An excellent live band.
The Shots @ The Khyber [More]- Another Philadelphia band, I just happened to catch these guys on an opening slot in which they blew the two bands that followed of the stage.
My newest Philly band to watch out for.
Philadelphia’s The A-Sides new album Silver Storms is a shimmering, glorious, epic sounding pop record released this past Tuesday. This afternoon they brought their equally amazing live showto the World Cafe Live for a live broadcast on WXPN.
Here’s a couple pictures and a link to the archived live show on NPR’s site.
Next week they embark on a tour that will bring one of Philadelphia’s finest to all the corners of the country. Head on out and see it for yourself when they come your way.

Just about a week ago I had a chance to catch Josh Ritter play as show for WXPN’s Free At Noon series at the World Cafe Live in Philadelphia. It ended up being one of the best shows I’ve seen all year. Now, thanks to the magic of a friend who rocks, I have it to share with all of you today. This is the radio broadcast portion, Josh also came back out after it was off air and did a spine chilling rendition of Bruce Springsteen‘s The River as well as his own song Kathleen to cap off the afternoon. Enjoy on this holiday weekend.

Looking for something to do tonight in Philadelphia. Head on down the World Cafe Live and catch Contramano. A trio fronted by Brooklyn via Argentina cello player Pablo Cubarle, Contramano’s music is a raw and powerful blend of alternative indie rock and precussive Latin rhythms. Imagine the sound of throwing the Talking Heads, The Pixies, Cold War Kids and Los Lonely Boys all together and you’ll start to get an idea of what they sound like.
Their new album Unsatisfecho is eleven songs full of quirky danceable endearing goodness that will keep you coming back again and again. Check out the title track Unsatisfied for a taste of their unique mix of influences.
Here’s a taste of Contramano live playing the song Contramano at Queens Theatre in the Park in NYC
Sometimes it’s good to be on “The List“. Last night’s LCD Soundsystem show at The TLA(Fillmore) in Philadelphia was a freebie sponsored by myspace’s “The List“. All of the tickets were given away free via a myspace contest. Local radio station Y-Rock also gave some away. The free tickets insured the place was packed as Myspace was filming the entire concert to be placed on the web later. Considering it was a myspace giveaway the crowd was a good mix of all ages not overly skewed towards myspace’s younger demographic. Doors opened at 8:00 but LCD didn’t hit the stage until approximately 9:15 and they played until about 10:30. Just over an hour, but the energy level was insane through the whole thing. As electronic as they may sound there’s no drum machines, they play all of it with a full band and let me tell you they know how to rock. I’d say the highlights were the faster more rocking version Daft Punk Is Playing At My House, All My Friends, which was absolutely transcendent live far superior to the album version, and Yeah which had the entire crowd going nuts and singing along.
The Joy Division cover in the encore was also very cool to get All in all a great show, definitely worth catching if they come your way. Except for a handful of US shows most of their upcoming tour dates are in Europe and beyond.

Well the number of you that have been stopping by looking for new Ryan Adams songs has been incredible the past few weeks and with the impending release of Easy Tiger and the upcoming tour, anticipation has been reaching a fever pitch. To hold you over for the next three weeks or so here’s a classic show from the Exit/In in Nashville from October 28, 1999. This show happened prior to the release of the now classic Heartbreaker and is one of Ryan’s first solo outings. Plenty of still unreleased songs here, as well as a guest appearance from Gillian Welch. This show still ranks up there for me as one of Ryan’s all time best performances.
