Christmas Song Of The Day 20

Holiday television specials have become as much of a harbinger of the impending season as the arrival of Santa at the Thanksgiving Day parade. In the process they have spawned quite a few holiday classic songs in their wake, who can think of Christmas without The Grinch or Snoopy and the rest of the Peanuts gang dancing around a tree. Here’s a couple today that I’m sure are imbedded deep in the subconcious of anyone who watched those holiday specials year after year. Go ahead, sing along you know the words.

As the cold winter rain turns to sleet and gradually to snow where I’m at today, here’s one that I think perfectly captures that blissful calm serenity that seems to exist in the world during a slowly falling snow. Perfect for sitting back and unwinding from the holiday hustle and bustle for a bit.

Jimi Hendrix turned it up for his version, Tori Amos turned it way down for hers, and The Dandy Warhols are taking it down the river where tomorrow never knows for a psychedelic spin on an old classic today.

A Christmas ditty from one of the truly underated songwriters of today. John Wesley Harding has a flair for words with a twist of humor that is pretty much unrivalled amongst his peers. His new album, Who Was Changed And Who Was Dead , which I believe is his fifteenth, is set for a March 2009 release and is definitely one you should watch out for. I know I’ll be buying it for sure.

Chestnuts roasting on an open fire, a line that has become so synonymous with Christmastime. Does anyone even carry on this tradition anymore ? It’s one of the winter time season holiday memories of my youth up until the time I was about 5 or 6 when we moved into a new house that didn’t have a fireplace anymore and it just kind of faded away.

Big thanks To BRH for turning me on to today’s selection. It’s a slinky, soulful, little number that’s just perfect for grabbing your significant other and doing some slow and dirty holiday dancing beneath the mistletoe.  So fire up the fireplace, grab your libation of choice and get to unwrapping those special presents.

A Philadelphia area Christmas classic today from the early 80’s, a time when local music scene was riding the crest of a wave with bands like The Hooters, The A’s and Robert Hazard. Alan Mann too spent a period of time riding that wave but never really reached the heights of his contemporaries. He sadly died in 1987 after falling from his South Street apartment window. This song endures as one of the truly shining moments of a career and life that ended much too soon.
