With only twelve days left until Christmas, here’s one to get you in the the mood to trim that tree if you haven’t already. A brand new album of Christmas songs by Chicago band The Layaways called Maybe Next Year. Ten songs, including two originals by the band, it’s a smooth blend of indie folk tinged with just a bit shoegazey, psychedelic keyboard flourishes to make it sparkle. Perfect listening to accompany whatever holiday preparations you may be making today.

Breaking the long lull in posting with a few photos today from this past Thursday night’s first annual fundraiser show for the Weathervane Music Organization. If you havn’t heard of Weathervane it’s a non profit organization cofounded by Philadelphia’s own Brian McTear to work with and support independent artists in this challenging new era for working musicians. You can learn more and get involved by lending your support here http://weathervanemusic.org/. Thursday night started off in the amazing space at 2424 Studios with a special solo show by Scott McMicken of Dr Dog at a special VIP pre-show party. It then moved over to Johnny Brendas for a show by all of the artist’s Weathervane had worked with on their 2009 Project Series, {{{Sunset}}}, East Hundred, Danielson and BC Camplight. A perfect way to cap off 2009 and set the anticpation high for Weathervane’s 2010 projects.

Some Photos From This Past Thursday’s Battle Of The Blogs 2

A few photos from this past Thursday night’s Battle Of The Blogs show at The North Star Bar In Philadelphia. The last minute addtion to the bill of the band 100 Monkeys ensured a good crowd of barely 21 year old girls, who while clearly there in adoration of Twilight vampire actor Jackson Rathbone, watched all of the night’s band with rapt attention and much applause. Lima Research Society started it off with an energetic set that kicked the night into high gear with the crowd singing along and dancing and it never looked back. My band Splash1 was up next and I’ll say it went really well from the band’s perspective but I’ll need to leave any review of our set to an unbiased source. Next up was Victor Victor Band, my first time seeing them, they’re an impressive two piece boy-girl combo that unleashed a blistering blend of garage rock in a vein similar to the White Stripes or The Black Keys. 100 Monkeys closed out the night with a bluesy/reggae influenced set of rock that definitely had a west coast beach party jam feel to it.  Big thanks to Heyday and North Star Bar for hosting the party as well as my fellow bloggers Jessica from Popwreckoning and Trip from Teenage Kicks,  the entire night was a blast.

Finally bringing you the answer today to the question, “Who in the hell won last week’s Battle Of The Blogs ?” Up against a smoking, but abbreviated set(if you were there you know what I mean, I’ll say no more) from BOS representatives The Shots, and an absolutely amazing performance from The Broken Bell‘s pick,River City Extension, Girl About Town‘s band of the night, Robes racked up the vote count to take home the winning title in the first round of Battle Of The Blogs, last Thursday Night at Philly’s North Star Bar.

Riding an amazing buzz right now in the Philly scene, Robes sound is steeped heavily in the influence of early eighties bands like Joy Division, Depeche Mode and Bauhaus but without the cold harshness of other current bands mining the same genre, like Interpol or Bloc Party. Their current release, The Breaks EP, is available for free download from their myspace page and they’re heading into Miner Street studios with Philly’s resident production genius Brian McTear to record the followup. If Brian’s recent work on the likes of East Hundred’s Passenger & Canadian Invasion’s Three Cheers For The Invisible Hand are any indication, it will be one of this year’s stellar records.

Robes :
Gregory- Vocals
Ryan- Guitar/Vocals
Kevin- Drums
JJ- Bass
Dan- Guitar

A few photos from this past Friday night’s show at Johnny Brenda’s In Philadelphia. Opening the night was Philadelphia’s In Grenada, proving that they are indeed deserving of our artist to watch status for 2009, their powerful double drumming fueled songs only increase in intensity in a live setting. Be on the lookout for their new record coming soon. Lambchop then turned an excellent, albeit somewhat mellow set that recalled the smooth rootsy sound of Bob Dylan‘s recent records.
