BOS Presents: Swift Technique,Dear Althea,Rogue Thief @ The M Room Sunday November 16th
Don’t forget we have a really great show coming up this Sunday November 16th at The M Room in Philadelphia. Up until about a month ago I had never heard of Swift Technique, but after having seen them, how they remain one of Philadelphia’s best kept secrets I don’t know. Playing a unique blend of horn infused funk, soul and hip hop with a Philly edge, they are one of the tightest bands I have seen in quite a while. Blew me away the first time I saw them, trust me you’ll be kicking yourself for a long time to come if you miss this one on Sunday, they’re hot. Also on the bill are Dear Althea, with a sound somewhere between Sonic Youth and Sleater Kinney, they prove that the girls rock as hard as the boys. And opening the night. a relatively rare appearance by the noisy art phenomenon that is Rogue Thief.
A varied and amazing night of music all around. See you there.

Hey Philly and beyond, come on out to the North Star this Friday night for the Chris Tucker tribute, I’ll be helping my friends at Girl About Town with the silent auction stop by and say hi.
Here’s more info via Girl About Town:
On Friday October 17th, six area bands will gather at the North Star Bar in Philadelphia to honor Christopher Tucker. Chris was our friend who passed away this summer, and he was a talented musician and overall great guy who touched a lot of people in Philadelphia and beyond. The night will serve as a benefit for his young son Jackson.
A $10 minimum donation will be requested at the door, advance tickets are now available via North Star Bar and Ticketweb.
The evening’s lineup will include:
– Fleetwood Mike (acoustic version’s of Fleetwood Mac tunes as performed by Audible members Mike and Kris)
– Joey Sweeney and Friends (Chris’ editor at Philebrity.com where Chris was a contributor)
– The Blood Feathers
– The Sky Drops (featuring Rob Montejo from Smashing Orange, and Monika Bullette from Nero, two of Chris’ closest friends in the Delaware music scene)
– The Sunshine Recorder (featuring members of The Cobbs)
– The Asteroid #4 (stalwarts of the Psychedelphia scene of which Chris was such a fan).
Musicians will perform their own tunes and some of the performers will feature covers of Chris’ work.A special video will also be screened for the first time. Just a week before his passing, Chris recorded his last song and created a video for it as well with local artist Nico. The video was to be completed as a concept in two parts, however only the first part was completed, that first part will be screened and will allow fans of Chris to hear new music from Chris one more time.
Girl About Town is also organizing a silent auction benefit to run the night of the event. If you have anything to donate, please contact us, it’s not too late. Thank you and see you there!

Their latest CD ,We Are All Part of A Dream You’re Having was among the Bag Of Songs Top 25 for 2007. Currently in the midst of recording their follow-up record, recent shows have showcased some new songs that are even better yet.

I think this quote from their myspace page sums up Butane Variations perfectly : “Butane Variations are 4 people from New York, New York. They play garage-punk-country that may weave avant-intricate compositions with hooky pop tunes. Sometimes the beat sounds like a tennis match and sometimes the songs wear argyle socks. There’s 4 people in the band so they can all fit in the same car.” Great stuff, and hey, they’ve been on Daytrotter, way coolness.

Closing out the night will Cheers Elephant who have gone from a month long residency at The Khyber back in January to playing high profile summer shows like Philly’s Popped! Festival and XPoNential Music Festival. They blend influences like The Kinks, Beatles and sixties psychedelia into a thoroughly modern sound and back it all up with a super high energy live show. I’ve seen them about seven or eight times now over the past year and they just keep getting better and better each time. A must see.

Bag of Songs Presents : Hymns,Pico Vs Island Trees, & Shawn Fogel Sunday May 25th @ M Room In Philadelphia

Alright, this Sunday May 25th three excellent bands coming up at The M Room in Philadelphia, Hymns, Pico Vs Island Trees and Shawn Fogel. And remember, you can party like it’s a Saturday night because the next day is a holiday, so there’s no real excuse to stay home.
Kicking off the night will be Shawn Fogel whose music has been featured here on BOS before. Shawn’s been described as a combination of Elvis Costello and Neil Young, his excellent songwriting wrapped in an original Americana Power Pop sound is an addicting blend. Check out one of my favorite songs off his latest EP One Day In The Desert.

Pico Vs Island Trees is up next, and, if you were wondering just like I did, the band’s name comes from a supreme court case where Stephen Pico led a group of high school students against the Island Trees School Board protesting the banning of books. Sporting an impressive 25,000 plus friends on their myspace page, their music is an obviously well liked blend of sounds ranging from jazz to indie rock.

Capping off the evening will be New York’s Hymns, their press kit blurb sums up it well : “Hymns is a New York band; one that marries Pavement to Neil Young with the twang of Gram, the inebriation of Guided by Voices and the drive of Spoon. Hymns plays vintage rock tunes with a slight country feel and earnest, memorable melodies.” Give a listen to the rolling horn infused I Can’t Be What U Want from their just released Travel In Herds
