Going Donuts On Election Day !

Philadelphia’s going to be a buzzing on election day next week, in addition to being one of the hottest contested states this time around, there’s going to be plenty of music action. I told you about the new Illinois music yesterday, today I have a brand new video from Phildelphia’s Donuts. It’s for their song Guantanamo from their record Jet Ear. It was directed by Mark Schreiber (of Slo-Mo, John Train, The Low Road, etc) and Suzanne Penn (of the Philadelphia Art Museum) and shot at the shore in Ocean City,New Jersey while throngs of adoring teenage fan girls looked on. Check it out, it’s a great song, and there’s some cool special effects in the video.

Here’s their game plan for next Tuesday:
“on election day, we will promote the video by donning our prison jumpsuits
and busking the song in front of as many polling places in philly that we
can get to … the idea is to change history …”

Watch for’em, have a good time while you vote, and as they say “change history”

How Not To Get Your Picture In The Paper

Want to know how not to get your picture in the paper ?

Take your first real vacation in about five years on the same week that Philadelphia Weekly decides they need to interview you for a special cover story on blogging for their annual music issue.
And, during said vacation, end up being in the middle of the Nevada desert with no cell phone service when they try to call you for a real interview so you have to end up scrobbling together some too short answers to their questions in the middle of the night at an internet kiosk in a Las Vegas hotel lobby.

It’s not all bad though, we still made the story, so be sure you read Brian Mcmanus’s feature on Philadelphia bloggers in the Philadelphia Weekly today.

Check out the web version of the story here.

My fellow Bucks County musical residents, Illinois have a new album coming next Tuesday, November 4th, a six volume extravaganza called The Adventures of Kid Catastrophe. For the next six months they’ll be digitally releasing a chapter a month with a batch of songs and an ccompanying short film put together by Arch from the band and People-Food. Check out the video trailer and this first musical taste.
I’m really liking the cool groove of Hang On, it’s a bit electronic, a bit funky, and don’t miss the vocal solo, good stuff.

Catching Up After A Week Away…

Back catching up on a few things today after a week away. If you ever get to Las Vegas I highly recommend the Beatles themed, LOVE Cirque Du Soleil show, it is excellent. A little lighter on the acrobatics than your usual Cirque Du Soleil show but chock full of cool special effects and rare Beatles audio snippets.

I had left you all with a nice mix to tide you over for the week while I was away, if you’re wondering where it went, well apparently it was too good and got BOS smacked with it’s first DMCA takedown notice, causing Google/Blogspot to immediately pull the post. I can’t repost the songs, but for those of you who missed it, here’s the playlist.

I Party, You Party, We All Party Down
Eli “Paperboy” Reed And The True Loves – (Doin’ The)Boom Boom [Roll With You]
James Hunter – She’s Got A Way [The Hard Way]
The Clash – Wrong ‘Em Boyo [London Calling]
Alice Cooper – Be My Lover [Mascara & Monsters]
Black Kids – Look At Me(When I Rock Wichoo) [Partie Traumatic]
The Ting Tings – Fruit Machine [We Started Nothing]
Michael Franti & Spearhead – Say Hey (I Love You) [All Rebel Rockers]
The Pretenders – Break Up The Concrete [Break Up The Concrete]
The Sonics – Psycho [Nuggets]
My Name Is George – You’re No Good [Black And Blue]
Beck – Gamma Ray [Modern Guilt]
Cold War Kids – Something Is Not Right With Me [Loyalty To Loyalty]
Kanye West – Love Lockdown #2 [808s And Heartbreak]

Our friends in Canadian Invasion have also been busy this week, their excellent new album Three Cheers For The Invisible Hand is now set for a February 2009 release date and graphic artist Melinda The Martian has created a video for the title track. They’ve also put together a Phillies fight song to help usher the Phils into a World Series win against Tampa Bay. Check ’em out.

In the help wanted column, bass players in Brooklyn take note, I Am The Heat is looking for a new bass player. Heres’ the scoop from their myspace blog:

Looking for a Bassist!
Category: Music

Sadly, Anthony has left the band to pursue his endeavors as an all-star graphic designer. He will be missed. So we’re going to finish up these last few shows with him and in the meantime, we’re looking to fill his shoes. Here is the ad we’re posting everywhere:

WE ARE:
A fun, catchy, raucous, danceable indierock quartet (including you). We gig 1-2 times per month to an ever-increasing crowd of friends and fans. Our live show is awesome. We practice twice a week in WB. We have an UNSHARED lock-out that’s really nice!

We’ve self-released 2 EPs and gotten some very positive feedback (http://www.iamtheheat.com/press/). We’re currently spending our time compiling material for a full-length record. And we’ve recently filmed for the Fearless Music TV show – our spot should air in a month or so. . Things are going well…

YOU ARE:
– accomplished bassist
– comfortable writing collaboratively (we really stress this – we write as a band)
– ability to quickly learning a set’s worth of existing material
– energetic, enthusiastic, and dedicated
– someone who loves to hang out/party/etc. We love fun. You should too. We’re all good friends, blah blah blah.
– someone who will take this serious. We all have full-time jobs, but we do intend to start taking small tours (days, not weeks) within the next few months.

* ability to sing backing vocals is a plus!

This is a great opportunity to join a rad band with some fantastic momentum. If you are interested, please check out the tracks we have online (links below) and then message us with some juicy details about YOU! Influences? Best show you’ve ever seen? Best show you’ve ever played? Links to previous bands are welcome!

Please note: at this time we are only looking for bass players.

Have a fantastic day!
xoxo,

New Music : It’s Starf*cker, Not Star Wars Motherf*cker

October 15, 2008 by · Leave a Comment

Hailing from the west coast’s current musical hotbed Portland, Oregon, Starf*cker has managed to carve their own small niche in what is a pretty crowded arena lately for keyboard/percussion based indie dance music. Not quite as quirky as Justice or MGMT, and somewhat less intricate than Yeasayer, they have a hypnotic, loopy, synth and guitar driven sound that works just as well for chilling out and and listening as it does on the dance floor. In a perfect world the hand clap driven Mike Ptyson should be a dance floor mega smash along the lines of D.A.N.C.E or Time To Pretend. Laadeedaa is what Radiohead could sound like if they just learned how to shake their moneymaker a bit. It doesn’t stop there, the album’s eleven addicting songs deep. Starf*cker is Josh Hodges, Ryan Biornstad & Shawn Glassford and bring their highly anticipated performance to town Saturday night at Philadelphia’s M Room. But if Philly’s not your hang, don’t fret, there’s plenty of other stops as they cross the country on tour. including multiple shows at CMJ in New York and Halloween in Missoula, Montana of all places.

Los Campesinos! have taken the frenetic danceable sounds that made Hold On Now, Youngster… one the better records of the year, focused and refined them just a little bit, and the end result is their fine second release of the year, the “mini album” We are Beautiful,We Are Doomed. It’s available digitally today with an extremely limited cd edition to be released next week. I’d advise picking up a copy of this quick they won’t last long.

Here’s some info about the Limted Edition via their website :
– 27th October sees the release of what the majority of you have decided to call our ‘second’ ‘album’. Not that we ever have mind you.
– There will be no singles released from this RECORD.
– This RELEASE is going to be limited. There will be one, worldwide run of CDs, and then it will be out of print. Done with.
-The package comes in a 14cm by 19cm by 2.5cm two-piece card box. That makes it rectangular in shape.
– The CD will be accompanied by a self-made DVD documentary of our weekend at Oya festival and SummerSonic in August of this year.
– It also includes a 30+ page ‘zine, including the record’s lyrics and contributions by artists including Xiu Xiu, Grandaddy, Tender Forever, Menomena, Parenthetical Girls and Paul Heaton, based around the title ‘We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed’.
– Also each box comes with an exclusive poster drawn for us by Jeffrey Brown.

For Jackson : A Tribute To Chris Tucker This Friday 10.17.08 at The North Star

Hey Philly and beyond, come on out to the North Star this Friday night for the Chris Tucker tribute, I’ll be helping my friends at Girl About Town with the silent auction stop by and say hi.

Here’s more info via Girl About Town:
On Friday October 17th, six area bands will gather at the North Star Bar in Philadelphia to honor Christopher Tucker. Chris was our friend who passed away this summer, and he was a talented musician and overall great guy who touched a lot of people in Philadelphia and beyond. The night will serve as a benefit for his young son Jackson.
A $10 minimum donation will be requested at the door, advance tickets are now available via North Star Bar and Ticketweb.

The evening’s lineup will include:
Fleetwood Mike (acoustic version’s of Fleetwood Mac tunes as performed by Audible members Mike and Kris)
Joey Sweeney and Friends (Chris’ editor at Philebrity.com where Chris was a contributor)
The Blood Feathers
The Sky Drops (featuring Rob Montejo from Smashing Orange, and Monika Bullette from Nero, two of Chris’ closest friends in the Delaware music scene)
The Sunshine Recorder (featuring members of The Cobbs)
The Asteroid #4 (stalwarts of the Psychedelphia scene of which Chris was such a fan).

Musicians will perform their own tunes and some of the performers will feature covers of Chris’ work.A special video will also be screened for the first time. Just a week before his passing, Chris recorded his last song and created a video for it as well with local artist Nico. The video was to be completed as a concept in two parts, however only the first part was completed, that first part will be screened and will allow fans of Chris to hear new music from Chris one more time.

Girl About Town is also organizing a silent auction benefit to run the night of the event. If you have anything to donate, please contact us, it’s not too late. Thank you and see you there!
