Here’s one from Glasgow UK’s A Band Called Quinn that’ll have you dancing around the Christmas tree in no time, it’s an especially good remix of their song It’s Christmas Time by Celebrity Murder Party. It gets really cool at about the halfway point when the blizzard of swirling synths kicks in over the gracefully looping vocals repeating “let it snow…let it snow…let it snow…”.  It’s one of the extra tracks on the upcoming Fluff Girl single from their Sun Moon Stars album released earlier this year.

The Format’s Dog Problems disc is easily one of my favorites of the past few years, a true power pop gem. Sadly, The Format has since disbanded, but now lead singer Nate Ruess has moved onto his new project called fun. and released an album called Aim and Ignite.  Special for the holidays they’ve put together this Beach Boys flavored Christmas single that’ll have you bopping along having holiday fun,fun,fun ’til daddy takes your ipod away.

Home for the holidays is someplace most everyone desires to be around this time of year. Gentleman Auction House put the feeling into song on one of my favorite Christmas releases from last year, Christmas In Love. They also released the excellent Alphabet Graveyard album as well. I wasn’t sure if I was going to have the time do this again this year, but after numerous emails from readers telling me how much they enjoyed it and requesting I do it again, here goes. Here’s one for you today that I’ve been blasting at high volume repeatedly during the past week. The new album by UK band The Heavy, The House That Dirt Built, was released back in October but I’m just finally catching up with it now and so should you all. It’s a blistering mix of gritty garage rock and shake your booty soul funk that just cooks from beginning to end. I’m bummed that I missed their show at World Cafe in Philadelphia a couple weeks ago, but hopefully they’ll be back sometime in the new year after tearing it up overseas throughout the coming weeks.

Jesse Leyh Of In Grenada 02.13.09 @ Johnny Brenda

Way back around February, Philadelphia’s In Grenada sent me a few early demo songs from a new album they were working on. Since then it has been one of my most anxiously awaited releases this year. That album, now titled Break recently made it’s way to my inbox and it has been well worth the wait. Ten songs that fully deliver on the promise of those early demos.  Music filled with powerful percussive rhythms, melodic reverb laden vocals and plenty of textural flourishes like acoustic guitar and xylophone.  Much like the Arcade Fire’s Neon Bible or Bruce Springsteen’s Darkness On the Edge of Town,  there’s an underlying sense of spirituality woven throughout the feel of the songs and the imagery of the lyrics that really ties the record together nicely. It’s one of my favorite releases so far this year.  Here’s a couple songs to give you a taste, one of my personal highlights, the hypnotic rhythms of It Doesn’t Matter and the majestic sounding There’s a Change.  Watch for an upcoming release date and be sure to head out and catch their equally amazing live show when they take the stage Wednesday, December 9th at Johnny Brenda’s in Philadelphia.
