Monday Morning Blues : Drinking Away Your St Patrick’s Day
What originally started as an Irish religious holiday back in the 17th century has now become one largest worldwide holiday celebrations of the year. St Patrick’s Day is when everyone gets to be Irish for a day, so put on your best green shirt, pour yourself a pint of Guinness and a shot of whiskey and join the party. Have fun and be safe.

One of the bands that blew me away when I saw them recently for the first time was Canada’s The Constantines. Someone stole one of their guitars at a recent show @ Lee’s Palace in Toronto.
From the band :
Hey Friends,
Thanks to all who came out to the show last night (March 30) at Lee’s Palace in Toronto. No thanks to the person who walked out of the club with Will’s guitar in Steve’s guitar case. We are asking anyone in the Toronto area to be on the look-out for a Black 1995 American Stratocaster with a white pick-guard, a rosewood fretboard, and a rainbow coloured guitar strap. The serial number is: N55 7313. The guitar case is a black Fender hardshell case, covered in Constantines, Threegut and Subpop Records stickers.
If whoever took the guitar reads this, you can contact us via cradlerock1@gmail.com and we can figure out a way for you to return it, no questions asked.
Thanks to everyone who has come to the shows in Eastern Canada so far. We head off to Winnipeg tomorrow and I am going to write another message in a few minutes announcing further tour dates in the Northeastern United States in late April.
xo.

From The Mailbag : Somme, Awesome Color, and more
Somme
The two piece band has already become almost cliche in today’s indie rock scene. Well, The Somme are not just another White Stripes or Black Keys wannabe peddling rough and raunchy blues based tunes. They go for a more epic wall of sonics in their purely instrumental songs. There’s enough intricacy going on that you’ll forget you’re just listening to one guitar and drums.
In their own words from their myspace:
THE BATTLE OF THE SOMME
The 1916 Battle of the Somme was one of the largest battles of the First World War. With more than one million casualties it was also one of the bloodiest battles in human history.
2007. Nearly half a decade has passed now since the mighty duo Somme first emerged from a
Chicago basement, endlessly cultivating, refining and rebuilding the ferocious guitar/drum offensive that’s since become their signature sound. Their debut EP, Weight, recorded in one day at Steve Albini’s legendary Electrical Audio Studios with revered engineer Greg Norman (High on Fire, Pelican, Mclusky, Magnolia Electric Co.), is a massive battle cry, at once reflecting the bloodsoaked triumphs of the allied forces and the thousands floating dead in the crimson River Somme on the day that remains, 87 years later, the British Army’s goriest onslaught in history.Somme is guitarist Daniel Medina, a 20 year-old chemical worker who spends his afternoons in a gas mask at a nearby plant hauling hazardous and contaminated materials, and drummer Kenny Preski whose mammoth drum sound is the explosive foundation and structural framework of
Somme’s epic colossus.Laid to tape in January 2007, with Norman at the decks, Weight is the first of a two-part series of sister recordings, the second of which is planned for release later this year. Due to the band’s intense working dynamic, it was essential that their music be captured live to analog equipment. The result is a spectacularly ambitious sonic marvel, owing as much to key influences Spacemen 3, Jesus and Mary Chain, and Slow Riot-era Godspeed You Black Emperor as to the spectres of that brutal 1916 holocaust.

Thanks to Adam for the tip-off on these guys. Awesome Color is a New York City via Ann Arbor, MI trio that blends the raw power of Iggy and The Stooges with Goo-era Sonic Youth. Michael Troutman – Bass
Allison Busch – Drums

The Swimmers start the first night of their every Wednesday in February residency at The Khyber in Philadelphia. It’s still early in the year but I’m going to make a bold statement and say their new record Fighting Trees is pretty much a shoo-in to make many best of 2007 lists at the end of the year. Check out a few songs on their myspace or stream the whole thing at their website.

From The Mailbag : The Swimmers,Triggers,New Chelsea Taube
First up from the mail bag today, The Swimmers.
from their myspace bio :
The Swimmers are a band based on a story. It’s not the story of how the
Philadelphia four-piece met or of how they came to music or even how they shook
off their alt-country tendencies; it’s the story of a young man who swims home
through the backyard pools in his affluent suburban town only to find his home
abandoned and ruined.Former One Star Hotel frontman Steve Yutzy-Burkey
based his new pop project on the famous short story, “The Swimmer” by John
Cheever, suddenly so inspired that he dismantled One Star Hotel to complete an
album’s worth of ambitious, upbeat songs far removed from the band’s jangly
country style.
Let me be one of the first to proclaim their new album Fighting Trees the first truly important release of 2007. Forget all about the new Shins, this is one disc you need to have right now. In trying to find a way to describe their sound, names like Tweedy, Dando, and McCartney spring to mind. This is an album chock full of intelligent, catchy songs. Watch for it to be released early this year, it is a must have.
The Swimmers are:
Steve Yutzy-Burkey, Rick Sieber, Krista Yutzy-Burkey, Scott French
With many thanks to the band here’s the first song off of Fighting Trees for a limited time only.
Stream the entire album at their website.

Up next is Pittsburgh based band Triggers
Imagine if Ben Folds and Devo joined forces with some help from Elvis Costello to form a band, and you have an idea of what Triggers sounds like. Triggers new EP, Elude the Suits, takes the sound introduced on their first demo and refines it even further. From the jumpy staccato new wave guitar hook of Eyes Like A Ninja to the hyper pop She Had Me At Takeoff with its falsetto vocal, to the piano pounding rocker Anyone At Anytime, Elude The Suits is full of great pop songs.
Triggers are :
Joe Kasler – Bass, Vocals
Rich Kawood – Drums, Vocals
Adam Rousseau – Guitar, Vocals
Brett Zoric – Keyboards, Vocals

Artist of the Week : Chelsea Taube
Hey all, I’m going to be on vacation hiatus for about the next week, so there will not be new daily posts for a bit. I’m going to leave you with a special feature on one of my personal favorite new artists of the last year or so, Chelsea Taube.
Chelsea is from RochesterMichigan, just outside Detroit. She is just 21 but has the natural songwriting skills people two and three times her age spend their whole life trying to perfect.
Claiming Ryan Adams,Bob Dylan and Patty Griffin among her biggest influences, Chelsea has a knack for poetic lyricism, and an ear for phrasing and melody that are truly original. She has voice that can cut clear through to your soul with it’s emotional power. But don’t just take my word for it spend the next week giving these 25 songs a listen and find why she is consistenly the most played artist on my ipod .
Note, most of these songs are just Chelesa and her acoustic guitar recorded on her laptop, but the brilliance still shines through.
